Rate me!

Here's another experiment; file this one too amongst all of my site hacks.

I've implemented a rating feature on this website: for each news entry, there is a link to either say you "liked" or "not liked" that entry.  Ten points are given for the former, and zero for the latter.  The site will then calculate the average score by all voters for that entry and assign a gold, silver or bronze star (or none) depending on the score.  The star gif images, btw, I've unabashedly stole from the Conversatron.

Basically, it's a rating system from 0-10, except only those two extremes are used.  So either you like it or don't. (Now no one can say that only the Sith deals in absolutes.)

And all votes are anonymous.  No IP addresses are logged.

Now why in the world would you want to do this?  Come to think of it, why in the world did _I_ want to do this -- especially given the tendency of online peoples to act like a total jerks while under the guise of anonymity.  Well, it's because I wanted to add some more interactivity in this website.  I figured, commmenting on a blog sometimes takes a lot of work.  This new feature affords the same interactivity as comments, but with a single, index finger cramp-free click.

And based on the current data so far, it seems like I'm barely averaging at about a bronze.  To which I reply: "Grr!  Cursed, overachieving personality, Batman!"

At any rate, with this rating system, it's a way for you to tell me how this site should grow in the long run.  In the short run, this allows you tell me which entries were awesome and how I should keep writing such things.

Or to tell me how much I suck.  I mean, c'mon, someone had to say it.

[Aside: Wouldn't it be ironic if this entry doesn't even reach bronze level?  Or sad?]
